Carmen was acting strange. I couldn’t put my finger on what exactly was wrong, but for the last two weeks, she hadn’t been the same - short-tempered, distracted, coming home late with excuses. I gazed at her lying across the bed, staring aimlessly out of the window. I would have to try to figure out what was going on with her later. I had a meeting that I couldn’t be late for.

I grabbed my dress shirt from the back of the closet door and struggled to put it on. Glancing at the clock on the nightstand, I cursed silently. I still had to get Amari together and drop him off; since Carmen had been in her funk, she was little to no help with Amari. I shook my head slightly. I don’t know how Miracle did this shit with no help every day.

I looked up quickly, hearing a knock on the door, and I smiled seeing Amari stand there. Buttoning the last button on my shirt, I waved him in. He walked in slowly, holding his stomach. “I don’t feel good,” he whined. “I think I need to throw up.”

My smile quickly faded, as I fastened my watch. I didn’t have time for this today. Thinking quickly through my options, my eyes settled on Carmen and I shook my head. I didn’t have any other choice; I definitely couldn’t ask Miracle or Sheila to keep him. Walking over to the bed, I shook her leg slightly, taking notice of her glassy eyes when she looked up at me. “Are you okay?” I asked her gently, not wanting to give her another reason to go off. “You don’t look so good.”

She forced a smile. “I’m fine, just tired. Maybe I am coming down with whatever he’s got,” she said, pointing at Amari. I nodded, hoping she was telling the truth.

“Do you think he can stay here with you today? He’s not feeling well and I don’t want to send him to school like that,” I asked her, as I slipped my feet into my shoes.

She nodded, and I smiled, relieved. Finally ready, I kissed Carmen on her forehead before bending to kiss her belly too. “Take care of my daughter,” I whispered, pecking her lips, before going to get my son settled back in his bedroom.

I exited my car with my bags from the grocery store. My supervisor had let me take off after my meeting, so I was going to play doctor for my little family. I had stopped and stocked up on everything I would need to take care of the two of them – medicine, soup, orange juice, tissues. I whistled as I walked towards the door, attempting to maneuver my bags and unlock the door. I hoped things were looking up for us. We hadn’t heard from Micah since he had sent the notes three weeks prior. Carmen was having a baby girl. Life was good.

As soon as I opened the door, I could hear my son’s screams and I dropped the bags as I sprinted towards the steps.
